- Born today in 1946: Former McLaren boss Ron Dennis, who ran the team during the height of its success with Niki Lauda, Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna and others
- Born today in 1959: Martin Brundle, who went on to win the 1988 World Sports-Prototype championship and 1990 Le Mans 24 Hours, and made nine podium appearances in F1
- 40 years ago today Hans Stuck, Derek Bell and Al Holbert won the Le Mans 24 Hours for Porsche. Another Porsche driver, Jo Gartner, was killed in a crash during the race on Sunday morning
- 40 years ago today Bobby Rahal scored an emotional Indianapolis 500 victory (below) for Truesports as team founder Jim Trueman had been diagnosed with colon cancer, and died 11 days later
