  • 30 years ago today Michael Schumacher scored his first victory as a Ferrari driver in a rain-lashed Spanish Grand Prix. Jean Alesi came second, three-quarters of a minute behind, and third-placed Jacques Villeneuve was the only other driver to finish on the lead lap
  • Born today in 1956: Jan Lammers, who won the 1988 Le Mans 24 Hours for Jaguar with team mates Johnny Dumfries and Andy Wallace. He also raced in Formula 1 and set a record for the longest-ever gap between consecutive starts: over 10 years passed between his appearances for Theodore in 1982 and March in 1992
  • 35 years ago today Michael Andretti led a one-two-three for the Andretti family in the Milwaukee 200. His cousin John Andretti came in second ahead of Michael’s father Mario.
  • 35 years ago today Nelson Piquet scored his final F1 victory in the Canadian Grand Prix after race leader Nigel Mansell’s Williams stopped halfway around the final lap at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Stefano Modena was promoted to second place for Tyrrell ahead of Riccardo Patrese, while Mansell was classified sixth, taking the final point
