Lando Norris can clinch the world championship in tomorrow’s Qatar Grand Prix as he goes into the penultimate round leading the standings.
Saturday’s sprint race leaves Norris 22 points ahead of Oscar Piastri and 25 ahead of Max Verstappen. With 25 points available in the final round at Yas Marina next week, if Norris finishes ahead of both his rivals on Sunday he is virtually guaranteed to secure the title.
How Norris can clinch the title in Qatar
Norris can only clinch the championship in Qatar by finishing at least eighth. If he does that, he will be champion depending on where Piastri and Verstappen finish:
If Norris wins he will win the championship regardless of where Piastri and Verstappen finish.
If Norris finishes second he will win the championship if Verstappen does not win and Piastri does not finish in the top three.
If Norris finishes third he will win the championship if Verstappen finishes behind him and Piastri does not finish in the top four.
If Norris finishes fourth he will win the championship if Verstappen finishes behind him and Piastri does not finish in the top six.
If Norris finishes fifth he will win the championship if Verstappen finishes behind him and Piastri does not finish in the top seven.
If Norris finishes sixth he will win the championship if Verstappen finishes behind him and Piastri does not finish in the top seven.
If Norris finishes seventh he will win the championship if Verstappen finishes behind him and Piastri does not finish in the top eight.
If Norris finishes eighth he will win the championship if Verstappen finishes behind him and Piastri does not finish in the top 10.

Other scenarios
If the race distance is shortened, fewer points may be awarded, which changes how likely the title is to be decided. In a 50-75% or 25-50% distance race Norris would need at least sixth, while in a sub-25% distance race he could not win the title without finishing the top two.
Both scenarios would also depend on where Piastri and Verstappen finish. All these outcomes can be checked using the points calculator:
