In a move to enhance road safety, the state govt has issued fresh guidelines making quality and govt approved reflective tapes and rear marking plates mandatory on a wide range of vehicles. The decision comes amid concerns that night-time accidents are often caused by poor visibility of heavy vehicles parked or moving slowly on highways.
The order, issued by the transport, roads & buildings department, covers two-wheelers, auto-rickshaws, goods carriers, passenger buses, tractors, trailers, and construction equipment. To ensure compliance, a QR code-based management information system (MIS) will be used to verify the authenticity of reflectors and prevent the use of fake or substandard products.
“While the rule already existed, most reflectors on vehicles were fake, faded quickly, or provided poor visibility. To address this, only quality reflectors from manufacturers approved by accredited testing agencies will be allowed. The QR system will help us track and verify them,” Ch Shiva Lingaiah, joint transport commissioner, told TOI.
For implementation, the transport commissioner will empanel certified manufacturers, with a committee of senior officials tasked to scrutinise applications and verify products. Vehicles without approved reflectors will not receive fitness or registration certificates. Manufacturers violating norms risk penalties, including forfeiture of bank guarantees.
