India has set a target of achieving 30 per cent EV penetration by 2030 as part of its strategy to cut dependence on fossil fuels and lower emissions.

Union Minister for New & Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi will inaugurate a state-of-the-art electric vehicle (EV) testing facility at the Alipore Regional Laboratory in Kolkata on Wednesday, marking a significant step in strengthening India’s EV ecosystem. The new centre is equipped with advanced infrastructure to test EV batteries and components for electrical safety, durability, functional safety, climate resilience and compliance with global standards such as FCC/ISED. It will offer manufacturers, especially in eastern India, internationally recognised certification services to ensure product reliability and regulatory compliance. The lab’s testing scope includes IP rating checks, UV exposure, corrosion resistance and mechanical safety assessments such as flammability and glow wire tests. By offering such comprehensive services, the facility is expected to boost user confidence in EVs and accelerate adoption.

India has set a target of achieving 30 per cent EV penetration by 2030 as part of its strategy to cut dependence on fossil fuels and lower emissions. Officials said the Kolkata facility reflects the government’s commitment to reducing import dependency and empowering domestic manufacturers with affordable, reliable testing infrastructure.

The centre, they added, will play a pivotal role in ensuring the safety, performance and global competitiveness of Indian EV products, reinforcing testing infrastructure as a key enabler in the country’s green mobility transition.
