Lamborghini’s Fastest, Most Powerful Hypercar Ever Is A Plug-In Hybrid

Plug-in hybrid supercars aren’t exactly new–the McLaren P1 and Porsche 918 wowed everybody with the tech more than a decade ago. Now, though, Lamborghini upped the ante with the Fenomeno, its fastest and most powerful road car ever.

Obviously, this isn’t your average PHEV, but it just goes to show that a technology that’s readily available on regular commuter cars can also turn things up to eleven in the supercar world.

Based on the Revuelto, the new Lamborghini Fenomeno uses a 6.5-liter V-12 gas engine that sends 823 horsepower and 534 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels through an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. In other words, it’s the most powerful V-12 ever made by Lambo.

This is the usual supercar stuff, though. What makes the Fenomeno special is that it uses three electric motors–two powering the front wheels and one axial flux unit from Yasa assisting the gas engine. Each of the two front e-motors makes 147 hp and 258 lb-ft–they also enable the car to go in reverse. Together with the axial flux drive unit mounted on top of the transmission, the total output goes up to a whopping 1,065 hp. The zero to 60 miles per hour sprint is done in just 2.4 seconds, while the top speed is rated at “over” 217 miles per hour (350 kilometers per hour).

More Fast Stuff

Compared to the Revuelto, the Fenomemo has 64 hp extra. That’s partly thanks to a redesigned valvetrain for the fire-breathing V-12, but another part of it is due to a new high-voltage battery that was designed specifically for the Fenomeno. While the Revuelto and Temerario’s electric motors are powered by a 3.8-kilowatt-hour battery, the Fenomeno gets a 7-kilowatt-hour pack. Lambo didn’t say how much power the bigger pack can discharge or how quickly it can be recharged when plugged in, but we know that the Temerario, with its smaller battery, can accept up to 7 kW from an AC source.

“With the Fenomeno, Lamborghini once again presents an incomparable super sports car in a limited edition,” Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann said. “The combination of the most powerful V-12 in our history, breathtaking design, superior aerodynamics, and cutting-edge technologies such as extreme lightweight construction makes the Fenomeno the most extraordinary super sports car of our time.”

Just 29 units of the Fenomeno will be made, and all of them will come with a set of carbon-ceramic brakes that use tech borrowed from the automaker’s endurance racing program. There’s also a manually adjustable suspension system and a new “6D” sensor that factors in acceleration, pitch, roll and yaw to come up with the best way to deliver traction depending on the road conditions.

If you’re in the market for a fabulous, rare Lamborghini, the Temerario could be the one for you–if you have millions of dollars to spare and somehow got the chance to actually buy one in the first place, that is, as the car is rumored to be sold out already.
