George Russell, Mercedes, Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, 2026

George Russell has been summoned to the stewards for allegedly breaking Formula 1’s safety rules during the Canadian Grand Prix.

The suspected infringement relates to article 12.2.1.h of the International Sporting Code which forbids “any unsafe act or failure to take reasonable measures, thus resulting in an unsafe situation.”

The stewards did not specify the act which Russell is being investigated for. The Mercedes driver threw the cockpit surround from his car onto the track after retiring from the race.

Russell was leading when he suffered a power unit failure which caused his immediate retirement. His team mate Andrea Kimi Antonelli won the race and pulled 43 points ahead of him at the top of the championship standings.

The stewards have also summoned Liam Lawson and Nico Hulkenberg for potentially breaching the formation lap rules. Two extra formation laps took place before the race as the start was disrupted by a technical problem on Arvid Lindblad’s Racing Bulls. Lawson finished seventh, Hulkenberg 12th.
