Rolls-Royce on Monday said it has supplied four mtu 12V 396 TE54 generator sets for INS Mahendragiri, the sixth indigenous Nilgiri-class stealth frigate commissioned into the Indian Navy, strengthening its long-standing partnership with India’s naval modernisation programme.
The warship, commissioned by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in Visakhapatnam on July 11, was designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and features more than 75 per cent indigenous content. Rolls-Royce said each of the four mtu generator sets delivers 1 MW of electrical power to support the vessel’s operational requirements.
Expanding footprint in Indian Navy
The company said its mtu solutions also power INS Agray and INS Dunagiri, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi commissioned on June 21. INS Agray, an Arnala-class anti-submarine warfare shallow water craft, is equipped with three mtu 20V 4000 M93L propulsion engines, while INS Dunagiri uses the same mtu 12V 396 TE54 generator sets as INS Mahendragiri.
“The commissioning of INS Mahendragiri and the recent commissioning of INS Agray and INS Dunagiri mark significant milestones in our longstanding partnership with the Navy,” said Sashi Mukundan, Executive Vice President – Transformation, Rolls-Royce India.
Supports indigenous defence manufacturing
According to the company, more than 1,400 Rolls-Royce engines currently power platforms across the Indian Air Force, Navy, Coast Guard and Army. Rolls-Royce said its India operations include more than 2,800 engineers supporting global development programmes as part of an ecosystem employing over 4,000 people.
The Nilgiri-class frigates are being built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL) and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) as part of India’s indigenous naval shipbuilding programme.
