Overspeeding claimed the lives of 6,720 people, accounting for 88.7 per cent of the total 7,760 road accident deaths recorded in Telangana in 2023, according to the Accidental Deaths & Suicides in India 2023 report released by the NCRB on Tuesday. More than 21,000 people were also injured in 22,903 accidents reported in 2023.Telangana recorded over 35 accidental deaths per lakh population in 2023, slightly higher than the national average of 31.9. The state witnessed a 1.33 per cent rise in road accident deaths compared to 7,559 in 2022. Road accidents in Telangana accounted for nearly 5 per cent of the 4,50,026 total accidents reported across the country.Among the deaths, 3,844 involved two-wheelers; 583 involved SUVs, cars, or jeeps; 401 were due to trucks, lorries, or mini trucks; 104 involved buses; 274 involved tractors, and 354 involved three-wheelers or auto rickshaws. Seventy-nine deaths were linked to bicycles, 39 to hand-drawn vehicles or cycle rickshaws, and one to an animal-drawn vehicle.Pedestrians made up 1,554 of the deaths. A total of 4,679 accidents occurred between 6-9 pm, while Dec recorded the highest number of accidents during the year with 2,249 cases.

Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs claimed 171 lives, while 476 people died due to dangerous or careless driving or overtaking.

Accidents caused by vehicles parked on road shoulders (illegal or unauthorised parking) resulted in 83 deaths, whilesix people died of physical fatigue. Defects in the mechanical condition of vehicles accounted for 25 deaths, and accidents caused by animal crossings led to 13 fatalities. Poor road infrastructure claimed 8 lives, while adverse weather conditions, including poor visibility, caused 25 deaths.
