<p>India’s electric vehicle (EV) push is increasingly being shaped by energy security concerns, alongside climate goals, a senior government official said on Wednesday.</p>
<p>Speaking at a ‘Transportation Decarbonisation Summit’ in Berlin, Archana Mittal, programme director for electric mobility and infrastructure connectivity at NITI Aayog, said India views transport electrification as a way to reduce dependence on fossil fuel imports while supporting economic growth.</p>
<p>India has adopted a “whole-of-government” approach to accelerate EV adoption, combining national policies with state-level initiatives, manufacturing incentives and infrastructure expansion, she added.</p>
<p>India’s EV penetration has risen to nearly 9 per cent in the 2025-26 fiscal year, driven by policy support, incentives and expanding infrastructure, she said.</p>
<p>The government has rolled out schemes such as the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles (FAME) programme and e-bus initiatives, alongside production-linked incentives to boost domestic manufacturing of vehicles, components and batteries, reduce import dependence and strengthen supply chains for critical minerals.</p>
<p>Charging infrastructure remains a key focus. The government recently approved about ₹1.27 billion ($15 million) to expand public EV charging in Delhi, targeting around 32,000 charging points by 2028.</p>
<p>Separately, Amit Bhatt of the International Council on Clean Transportation said EV sales in India rose 45 per cent year-on-year last month, underscoring accelerating demand in the fast-growing market.                    </p>
