Alpine has asked the FIA to review the speeding penalties which cost Pierre Gasly third place in the Monaco Grand Prix.
“After the result of today’s Monaco Grand Prix, BWT Alpine Formula 1 Team can confirm it has requested a Right of Review from the FIA following the penalties applied for pit lane speeding,” said the team in a statement.
Gasly said he was “heartbroken” by the result.
“I don’t have the words,” he told Sky. “I have too much emotions to process.”
“I just can’t get my head around what happened. It just doesn’t sound fair.
“I’ve been, triple-checking with the team, they set the right speed in the car. On both occasions, I’ve put the pit limiter [on] way before the line.”
He was one of five drivers who was penalised for breaking the pit lane speed limit during the race, but the only one to do so twice. Along with the other four drivers he initially broke the limit by 0.1kph, but on the second time he was 0.4kph over.

Gasly said he was “200% sure” he did not exceed the pit lane speed limit on either occasion. “I know I haven’t done anything wrong,” he said.
He was deeply disappointed to miss out on his and Alpine’s first podium finish since the 2024 Brazilian Grand Prix.
“We were working so hard for this moment,” he said. “In 10 years I do this, 10 years, I try to grab every opportunity. Five podiums, which is nothing, in my career and we passed the road in third position in front of all the French people and it gets taken away from us so right now I just don’t know what to say.”
Gasly appeared unaware of his penalty when he took the chequered flag. He initially shouted “P3!” and punched the air in celebration but was told “wait, wait” by his race engineer.
Any further communications which may have occured between them were not broadcast. Although Gasly continued to hold his arms aloft for much of his victory lap, he did not stop at the ‘P3’ board when he returned to the pit lane.
The two Alpine drivers accounted for half of the six pit lane speeding penalties which were issued. McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes’ George Russell all collected penalties. The latter suggested a “software problem” may have been responsible and visited the stewards during the red flag suspension to discuss the matter.

Alpine executive consultant Flavio Briatore said he the team “strongly disagrees” with Gasly’s penalties and believes they have good grounds to contest them. “These penalties were inflicted to at least four teams on the grid, which makes it a strong case for review,” he said. “As such, we have requested a Right of Review with the FIA.”
Gasly also had a close encounter with Lewis Hamilton on his return to the pits. The Alpine driver was travelling quickly when he arrived at Massenet and had to slow down rapidly to avoid hitting the Ferrari.
F1 Right of Review requests since 2019
The last team to instigate a Right of Review hearing was Williams following the Dutch Grand Prix last year. Although they succeeded, the success rate for teams with this form of protest is only 28%:
