Mercedes has told the FIA it will not proceed with its request for a review of George Russell’s Monaco Grand Prix penalty.
The hearing was due to take place on Saturday.
“The stewards have been informed by Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team that they are withdrawing the petition for Review in respect of the decisions of the stewards of the 2026 Monaco Grand Prix, breach of Article B1.6.3a [pit lane speed limit] of the FIA F1 Regulations in relation to car 63,” the stewards confirmed in a statement.
Russell was given a five-second time penalty during the race for exceeding the pit lane speed limit. After he failed to serve the penalty during a subsequent pit stop the stewards issued a drive-through penalty. He that penalty served when the race resumed following a red flag period, and finished out of the points.
Following the race Alpine successfully overturned two five-second time penalties the stewards issued to Pierre Gasly, also for pit lane speeding, which were applied to his race finishing time and could therefore be rescinded. The stewards ruled Gasly was incorrectly found to have exceeded the speed limit based on an incorrect measurement of the pit lane length.
Several other drivers served pit lane speeding penalties during the race for the same reason, including McLaren’s Oscar Piastri. McLaren confirmed on Tuesday they have brought a formal appeal against the decision to rescind Gasly’s penalties and the revised race result and championship standings.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff previously indicated he believed the team’s chance of bringing a successful action over Russell’s penalty was slim.
This is the second time Mercedes has requested a Right of Review. Their previous attempt, over an incident between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen at the 2021 Brazilian Grand Prix, was denied.
