Under the amendment, vehicles over 15 years old will attract a lump-sum tax every five years.

If you have vehicles older than 15 years and with lower emission norms such as BS-IV and below, you will now be paying higher environmental tax.

For two-wheelers, the tax will be levied at ₹2,000 for BS-VI vehicles and ₹4,000 for BS-IV and below. For petrol-driven vehicles other than two-wheelers, the tax will be ₹3,000 for BS-VI and ₹6,000 for BS-IV and below. For diesel-driven vehicles other than two-wheelers, the tax will be ₹3,500 for BS-VI and above and ₹7,000 for BS-IV and below.

The Maharashtra govt on Thursday notified amendments to the state’s Motor Vehicles tax law, introducing revised tax slabs for vehicles older than 15 years and capping tax on cranes. The changes come into force through the Maharashtra Motor Vehicles Tax (Amendment) Act, 2026, published in the state gazette on April 7 after receiving the governor’s assent.

Under the amendment to the Fifth Schedule of the Parent Act of 1958, vehicles completing 15 years from the date of first registration will now attract a lump-sum tax payable every five years.

Officials said the revised structure aims to rationalise taxation for ageing vehicles while factoring in their environmental impact, with higher charges imposed on older, more polluting categories.

In a separate amendment to the Sixth Schedule, the govt has introduced a cap on motor vehicle tax applicable to cranes, setting an upper limit of ₹30 lakh. This move is expected to provide relief to infrastructure and construction sectors, where cranes are widely used.

The amendment is part of the state’s broader effort to update legacy provisions in line with evolving emission norms and industry requirements.
