The FIA has confirmed details of the ‘Right of Review’ hearing Williams requested over a penalty issued to Carlos Sainz Jnr during the Dutch Grand Prix.
Sainz was given a 10-second time penalty, and two penalty points on his licence, after the stewards held him responsible for a collision with Liam Lawson at the exit of Tarzan.
The sport’s governing body has summoned a representative of Williams to attend the hearing, which will be held in two parts. The first part will determine whether the team has supplied a new piece of evidence which is both relevant and significant, in order for the stewards to reconsider their original decision.
The FIA has also notified Racing Bulls that a representative of its team will be required if the stewards accept Williams’ evidence and proceed with the second part of the hearing. Rival teams may attend the hearing if they choose.
The stewards ruled Sainz was responsible for the collision because “car 30 [Lawson] had the right to the corner and therefore car 55 was wholly or predominantly to blame.” Sainz was attempting to overtake Lawson around the outside of the corner at the time.
Both drivers suffered damage in the incident which dropped them out of the top 10. Racing Bulls team principal Alan Permane accused Sainz of “crashing into” Lawson and costing him fifth place.
Sainz was previously involved in a Right of Review hearing in 2023 when Ferrari, his team at the time, attempted to overturn his penalty at the Australian Grand Prix. They did not succeed. Out of the last 13 Right of Review questions brought to the FIA, 10 were not upheld.

FIA statement on Williams Right of Review hearing
The stewards received a petition for Review under Article 14 of the FIA International Sporting Code from Atlassian Williams Racing on 4 September 2025 in respect of the decision of the stewards of the 2025 Dutch Grand Prix, document 45, breach of Appendix L, Chapter IV, Article 2 d) of the International Sporting Code in relation to car 55.
The team representative is required to report to the stewards on Friday 12th, September 2025, at 15:30 CEST in relation to the above. The hearing will be held virtually via video conference, details of which will be provided by separate communication.
It should be noted that this hearing will be held in two parts. The first part will be to hear evidence and submissions from the petitioner as to whether there is a “significant and relevant new element which was unavailable to the party seeking the review at the time of the decision concerned.”
Should the stewards determine, in accordance with article 14.3 of the FIA International Sporting Code, that such an element exists, a second part of the hearing will be convened at a time to be advised, in all likelihood shortly after the first part of the Hearing.
Any other “concerned party” may seek the permission of the stewards to appear.
