“There is no such thing as a ‘green’ engine, but there is green energy.”

The Austrian Association for Automotive Engineering (ÖVK) will host the 46th International Vienna Motor Symposium from May 14 to 16, 2025, at the Hofburg Palace in Vienna, Austria. This year’s event will spotlight groundbreaking solutions for emission-free vehicles across multiple industries, including commercial, passenger, rail, shipping, and aviation.

The symposium aims to bring together industry leaders and experts to explore the latest advancements in sustainable transportation technologies. It will focus on shifting away from the traditional “exhaust pipe perspective”, highlighting the industry’s commitment to innovative, emission-free solutions that go beyond just reducing tailpipe emissions, aiming for a more comprehensive and sustainable future in transportation.

The annual event will feature over 300 experts from around the globe, providing a platform for sharing cutting-edge innovations and fostering discussions on the future of sustainable transportation.

Speaking at the press conference ahead of the event, Prof Bernhard Geringer, president of ÖVK said, “Meaningful climate protection will only be achieved with a systematic ‘cradle-to-grave’ approach.”

Dr. Geringer, who has served as chairman of the ÖVK since 2017, called on policymakers and legislators to adopt a broader approach to sustainable mobility. He urged a shift away from focusing solely on the energy converter—the motor—and toward considering the energy sources themselves.

“There is no such thing as a ‘green’ engine, but there is green energy. It is imperative to push ahead with a focus on green energy sources if we are to enable truly carbon-neutral mobility worldwide,” he said.

There is no single path to sustainable mobility, but rather a variety of routes that must be pursued simultaneously. The event will also highlight the growing involvement of manufacturers from Asia, presenting new drive concepts, as well as investors from the Arab world, reflecting the global collaboration essential for advancing sustainable transportation solutions.

Commercial Vehicles

This year’s meeting of experts will place a strong emphasis on solutions for commercial vehicles, ranging from electric options for local distribution transport and urban buses to large combustion engines for long-distance transport. Notably, some of these engines are powered by hydrogen, highlighting the diverse and innovative approaches being explored for sustainable commercial mobility.

Dr Frederik Zohm, executive board member for research & development at MAN Truck & Bus, said, “In order to decarbonise road freight transport, our focus is on battery-electric vehicles. These currently have clear advantages over other drive concepts in terms of energy efficiency and operating and energy costs. We therefore expect electric trucks to be best suited to the vast majority of transport applications.”

“In addition, hydrogen combustion or fuel cell technology can be an important emission-free supplement to electric trucks, especially for very long journeys, special applications or in regions without sufficient charging infrastructure,” he said.

Ingo Scholten, chief technology officer at Horse Powertrain, said, “The powertrain is no longer just a vehicle component – it has evolved into a complete technology sector that drives the future of mobility. We’re moving beyond the traditional supplier role to become architects of an entirely new industry.”

Horse Powertrain is a joint venture between the Chinese manufacturer Geely with the European Renault Group and Saudi Aramco.

Vienna Motor Symposium

Since 1979, the Vienna Motor Symposium has served as an annual scientific forum for developers of new drive systems, suppliers, and vehicle manufacturers. The event has become a key platform for discussing the latest advancements in automotive technology and fostering collaboration within the global mobility industry.

Founded in 1985 with the aim of promoting the practical application of automotive engineering, the ÖVK has grown to include 750 ordinary members. The association organises scientific events to advance the knowledge of mechanical engineering experts and other relevant professionals.

The International Vienna Motor Symposium, initiated by Professor Hans Peter Lenz, was first held in 1979 and has been organised by ÖVK since 1985.
