Uttarakhand to levy green tax on out-of-state vehicles from December

Uttarakhand will begin collecting a green tax from vehicles entering the state from December as part of efforts to curb pollution, protect the environment, and promote cleanliness, officials said as per PTI. According to the state transport department, different tax rates have been fixed for various vehicle categories — ₹80 for small vehicles, ₹250 for small cargo carriers, ₹140 for buses, and between ₹120 and ₹700 for trucks, depending on their weight.State Additional Transport Commissioner Sanat Kumar Singh said that Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras installed along the state’s borders will be used to capture registration details of all incoming vehicles.“Sixteen cameras were already installed in border areas, and the number has now been increased to 37,” he said.

The department has appointed a vendor company to collect the green tax. Data captured by the cameras will be processed through dedicated software, which will identify out-of-state vehicles while excluding Uttarakhand-registered, government, and two-wheeler vehicles.

“The data will then be sent to the National Payments Corporation of India database, where the wallet numbers of vehicle owners will be located, and the corresponding green tax amount will be automatically deducted and credited to the transport department’s account,” Singh explained.
