  • Lucid Gravity robotaxis are already being tested on San Francisco’s roads.
  • The American automaker, together with Uber and Nuro, plans to deploy over 20,000 autonomous taxis in the next five years.
  • The vehicles will be assembled by Lucid in Arizona using Nuro’s Level 4 hardware, and they’ll only be available on the Uber platform.

Lucid’s robotaxi dreams are inching closer to reality. The American electric car startup, together with its partners Uber and Nuro, unveiled the production-intent version of its upcoming Gravity autonomous taxi today at CES 2026 in Las Vegas.

Based on the Gravity SUV and built by Lucid in Arizona, the driverless taxi has already hit the roads of San Francisco for testing in December of last year, with safety drivers behind the wheel, ahead of the public rollout in the Bay Area later in 2026.

Lucid and Nuro plan to have over 100 robotaxis as part of the engineering test fleet, which will take part in real-world testing, as well as closed-course validation and simulation.

The partnership between Lucid, Uber and Nuro was announced in mid-2025, and it’s a big deal for the American EV maker that’s still bleeding cash. The three companies said they plan to deploy “20,000 or more” Lucid Gravity robotaxis around the world in the next six years, making it a big safety net for the luxury EV maker, in the same way that Rivian has Amazon’s order for 100,000 electric vans to lean on.

The cars will be fitted with Nuro’s Level 4-capable hardware suite, which includes high-resolution cameras, radars and solid-state lidar sensors that provide a 360-degree field of view. Some of these sensors are integrated into the Gravity’s bodywork, while others are mounted on a purpose-built roof-mounted structure that also has several LEDs and displays to make it easy for riders to identify the correct vehicle before getting in.

The Lucid Gravity is touted as the robotaxi industry’s most luxurious vehicle, offering an unprecedented in-cabin experience. The electric SUV can carry up to six passengers, and the robotaxi version’s interior is mostly unchanged compared to the standard model. However, Uber has created a bespoke in-ride experience, with interactive screens that allow riders to change the climate control settings, turn on the heated seats and change the music. There are also options to contact support and request the vehicle to pull over.

“The debut of our production intent robotaxi with Lucid and Uber is a significant milestone on our path to delivering autonomy at scale,” said Dave Ferguson, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Nuro. “By bringing together Nuro’s proven level 4 autonomy, Lucid’s advanced vehicle architecture, and Uber’s global reach, we’re building a robotaxi service designed for real-world operations and long-term growth.”

The American-made electric robotaxis will be available exclusively on the Uber platform, with the ride-hailing giant investing $300 million in Lucid as part of the deal. The production intent robotaxi is expected to start rolling off the assembly line in Arizona later this year, pending final validation.
