Lewis Hamilton would have started the Italian Grand Prix immediately behind his team mate Charles Leclerc.

But his penalty from the Dutch Grand Prix one week earlier left him five places further back.

He made amends soon after the start, working his way up to sixth place. Further progress proved difficult, however. Ferrari delayed his final pit stop in the hope of giving him a tyre advantage over George Russell ahead, but Hamilton found his rival was just too far ahead to catch by the end of the race.

All year long Hamilton has pressed race engineer Ricardo Adami for details on where he can improve his lap times as he adjusts to Ferrari’s car at every track on the calendar. That continued at Monza, despite Hamilton’s lap times comparing favourably with his team mate’s, particularly given the strain he put his tyres through at the start as he made his way past the likes of Fernando Alonso.

While at times this year it was clear Hamilton and Adami didn’t yet enjoy the easy back-and-forth typical of long-running partnerships, as the season enters its final third the pair are clearly communicating more effectively than before. But as the transcript of the Ferrari drivers’ messages from the team’s second home race shows, Hamilton is still diligently pressing Adami for the final few tenths of a second which separate him from his team mate at times.

Radio messages: Hamilton and Leclerc at Monza

Both drivers started the race on medium compound tyres and found themselves immediately scrapping for positions. Leclerc swapped places with Oscar Piastri, while Hamilton immediately got by Andrea Kimi Antonelli and Yuki Tsunoda on the first lap. By lap seven he had also picked off Alonso and Gabriel Bortoleto.

HamiltonGap ahead?
Adami1.5. He’s lapping in 24.0

Russell, who separated the Ferrari drivers in fifth place, pitted before them. However Leclerc had enough of a lead over him that Ferrari did not need to worry about responding immediately to his pit stop.

Lap: 28/53 LEC: 1’23.093, HAM: 1’23.398
BozziAnd Russell has boxed. Next car behind is Hamilton, 6.2.AdamiLet’s use our free air, let’s stretch our legs.

AdamiWe have scope to open diff high-speed for six and seven.
HamiltonYeah, okay. Tyres okay.
AdamiCool.

Lewis Hamilton, Ferrari, Monza, 2025

Ferrari brought Leclerc in six laps after Russell. The driver questioned whether it was necessary; he came out around five seconds ahead of the Mercedes, and Russell had to pass Esteban Ocon and Lance Stroll.

Lap: 33/53 LEC: 1’27.019, HAM: 1’23.010
BozziThis is still good.HamiltonBit of wear on the left front.
BozziFlap update when you can.AdamiUnderstood.
LeclercOkay.Charles lap time 23.0.

LeclercBut if… if we were not under threat why did we stop now? Just to know.HamiltonIt’s the understeer mid-corner of seven that I’m struggling with.
BozziWe can discuss it later. For now, Albon eight tenths slower ahead.AdamiCopy that, taken note.
Lap: 35/53 LEC: 1’22.170, HAM: 1’22.992
AdamiLet’s try a right toggle, six and seven, for rotation, right toggle.

AdamiUnderstood.
Lap: 37/53 LEC: 1’22.374, HAM: 1’22.878
AdamiPace is very good.
AdamiVerstappen race leader, yet to stop on the medium, same tyre, 22.7, Norris 22.6, Piastri 22.3.
HamiltonWhat times are people doing behind?

Ferrari left Hamilton out 11 laps longer than Russell, leaving him with just a 15-lap stint until the end of the race. This wasn’t short enough for them to consider soft tyres like the McLarens did, however; he left the pits on hards.

Lap: 38/53 LEC: 1’22.125, HAM: 1’27.181
BozziAlbon ahead 22.7.AdamiAlbon on hard, 22.6, and he’s 11 seconds behind you. Verstappen in front of you, on hard.

BozziAnd Russell boxed.HamiltonGreat job on the stop, guys. Sorry I was long.
AdamiWe have a 1.1 delta pace to Stroll ahead.

Hamilton had been just one-and-a-half seconds behind Russell before the Mercedes driver pitted. He was dismayed to discover his rival was now seven seconds up the road.

Lap: 40/53 LEC: 1’22.298, HAM: 1’22.194
LeclercSaftey Car window open or not?HamiltonThe gap to the guys further up ahead is massive.

BozziStatus four to the end but manage traction four and five. Piastri ahead on soft. [Corrects himself] two and five, exit two and five.HamiltonPace ahead? It’s clearly the same.
AdamiSeven seconds ahead of us, a 21.8

It took Hamilton five laps to hit the target Ferrari set him. He never looked likely to catch Russell before the end of the race and finished sixth.

Lap: 47/53 LEC: 1’21.846, HAM: 1’21.657
BozziSlow stop for Norris, coming out of the pits now.HamiltonToo big a deficit.

BozziLast lap.AdamiStarting last lap.

Charles Leclerc, Lewis Hamilton, Ferrari, Monza, 2025

The result was disappointing for both drivers: Leclerc failed to reach the podium in a race he won last year, Hamilton wasn’t able to continue his progress early in the race. But compared to his Zandvoort disaster, this was a considerably more encouraging afternoon for Hamilton.

Chequered flag
BozziAnd P4. Charge button on. Some good fighting, well done. Pick up where you can.AdamiThat’s a P6, solid job out there. Good comeback.
LeclercYeah, good job. Unfortunately this year it was impossible.HamiltonGreat job this weekend, guys. Solid result. Sorry I couldn’t get further up, but I gave it everything. Grazie a tutti, tifosi.
