  • BMW has updated the i4 electric sedan for the 2026 model year.
  • The battery-powered four-door gets new silicon carbide inverters, extending the driving range by up to 15 miles.
  • There’s also a new range-topper, which can go from zero to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds.

The 2026 BMW i4 is here, and it brings noteworthy changes to the driving range and power output of the popular electric sedan.

Thanks to new silicon carbide (SiC) inverters, which are more efficient than traditional silicon semiconductors, the entry-level 2026 BMW i4 eDrive40 can now deliver over 300 miles of range on a full charge, irrespective of the wheel and tire combination. With 18-inch wheels, the rear-wheel drive EV has an estimated range of 333 miles, up 15 miles from the outgoing model. With 19-inch wheels, it can go 307 miles on a full charge, up 12 miles.

That’s not all, though. The top-spec i4 M50 is now out of the picture, as it has been replaced by a new version called i4 M60. It’s powered by two electric motors with a maximum combined output of 593 horsepower–57 hp more than before–allowing it to sprint from zero to 60 miles per hour in 3.6 seconds. Despite the extra oomph, the i4 M60 can also drive farther than its predecessor–11 extra miles when riding on 19-inch wheels and 5 more miles on 20-inch wheels.

The 83.4-kilowatt-hour battery capacity is the same as before on all trims, as is the 200-kilowatt peak charging power, with BMW claiming between 88 and 108 miles of range can be added in 10 minutes from a powerful enough DC fast charger. The power output of the non-M-ified versions is also unchanged, with the rear-wheel-drive i4 eDrive40 delivering 335 hp, while the dual-motor i4 xDrive40 tops out at 396 hp.

All this being said, the all-wheel-drive, non-M Performance i4’s range has been curiously downgraded after this latest update. Previously, the 2025 model could deliver between 282 and 307 miles of range on a full charge, depending on the wheel size. The 2026 model, however, has an estimated range between 268 and 287 miles.

The order books for the 2026 BMW i4 are already open at dealerships across the United States. All i4 EVs now come as standard with a tire repair kit, and the Drive Recorder function has been added to the Parking Assistant Professional package. The updated BMW i4 was first announced in Europe earlier this year, and now the changes have gone live stateside, too.
