The assembly on Friday passed the Telangana Motor Vehicles Taxation (amendment) Bill, under which the govt will levy a road safety tax on new vehicles. Transport minister Ponnam Prabhakar told the House that the levy was being imposed following amendments brought in by the Centre to the Motor Vehicles Act.The road safety tax will be ₹2,000 for two-wheelers, ₹5,000 for light motor vehicles and ₹10,000 for heavy vehicles. The tax will not be levied on auto-rickshaws and tractor trolleys.
With the Assembly passing the amendment to the Telangana Motor Vehicles Taxation Act, the tax collected will be deposited in a special account and used mainly for road safety measures. The amendment will replace the quarterly tax on goods and transport vehicles with a life tax collected at 7.5 per cent of the vehicle cost.
Ponnam said the system was already being implemented in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat and a few other states for new vehicles purchased or registered. He added that Telangana would soon have automatic driving testing stations on the lines of those in New Delhi.
The assembly also passed another bill for the establishment of two private universities — Amity University at Mamidipalli in Rangareddy district and St. Mary’s Rehabilitation University at Deshmukhi in Yadadri-Bhongir district.
Medical and health minister C Damodar Rajanarasimha, on behalf of chief minister A Revanth Reddy, told the House that the two universities had been given the nod following compliance with the expert committee report and recommendations. He said the rehabilitation university would be the first such university in south India to offer courses on the treatment and handling of disability and intellectual disorders.However, BJP, AIMIM and CPI MLAs expressed concern over the increasing privatisation of education in the state. In all, the assembly passed five bills on Friday, including three relating to the merger of 27 ULBs and the GHMC expansion.
