The Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation (TNGECL) has invited bids to set up nine public EV charging stations in Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) limits under a build-own-operate model, according to news agency IANS.

The selected operator will design, install, and run the stations for 10 years. Each site must have at least three chargers — one for two- and three-wheelers and two 22kW AC chargers for four-wheelers — with up to five allowed. Locations include Besant Nagar Beach, Marina Beach, Semmozhi Poonga, and Anna Nagar’s Bougainvillea Park.

According to the official press release, GCC will provide land, and operators will pay TNGECL a per-unit fee for electricity sold.

The move comes amid industry concerns over recent tariff hikes by the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission, which raised fixed monthly charges for EV stations to the highest in the country. Stakeholders warn the costs could deter investment unless tariffs and fixed charges are reduced.
