Charles Leclerc said Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s attempt to overtake him was too optimistic after the pair collided.
The stewards handed Antonelli a 10-second time penalty and two penalty points on his licence after he made contact with the Ferrari at the Hugenholzbocht, taking Leclerc out of the race.
“Car 12 [Antonelli] was attempting an overtake on the inside of car 16 [Leclerc] at turn three and
understeered into the side of car 16,” the stewards noted. “This resulted in significant damage to car 16 and its retirement.
“It is clear that car 12 was wholly and predominantly to blame for the collision. We accordingly imposed a 10-second time penalty on car 12.”
Antonelli now has four penalty points on his licence following the incident.
Leclerc said Antonelli was “being overly optimistic at the inside of turn three,” when they collided, “which is fine, you’ve got to be aggressive and mistakes happen but it hurts because it costs a lot to the team.”
The Mercedes driver was on course to finish in the points at the time of the collision and said he was disappointed to end his race that way.

“It’s a shame because the race was looking good, the pace was very strong and we were coming back,” he said. “I tried and didn’t feel like I overshot massively.
“It was a bit unfortunate because while I was trying to keep it tight, he came a bit down from the banking and then that was the moment where the contact happened. It was a shame.
“I feel sorry because obviously it’s not nice to take someone out but at least some positives today and we move forward.”
