PM Modi said that strong policy frameworks and the development of world-class infrastructure are helping the country’s growth.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said that close collaboration between government and industry will be crucial to achieve self-reliance across the entire automobile manufacturing value chain.

In a message to the 65th annual convention of Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), the PM highlighted the automobile industry’s role as a driver of economic growth.

“The automobile industry has been a torchbearer of the Make-in-India initiative, boosting global confidence in Indian manufacturing and positioning India as a hub of automotive excellence,” he said. PM Modi added that strong policy frameworks and the development of world-class infrastructure are helping the country’s growth and noted that the convention provides a platform for energy startups to play a larger role in achieving clean mobility goals. “The growth of startups, especially in energy storage, is encouraging. It is noteworthy that this convention will also spotlight startups in energy storage and strategies for scaling sustainable mobility,” he said.

SIAM emphasised on long-term sustainability goals while highlighting the industry’s performance. Its President Sailesh Chandra announced progress on six key initiatives that align with India’s decarbonisation and mobility targets.

“These six initiatives reflect the collective resolve of the industry to not only meet immediate market needs but also contribute to India’s Amrit Kaal vision of sustainable mobility,” said Chandra.

On the sustainability front, SIAM noted the ongoing transition to E20-compatible vehicles under the government’s biofuel programme. The move is expected to reduce crude oil imports while supporting the farm economy. The industry also reported that 1.97 million electric vehicles were registered in FY25, up nearly 17 per cent from the previous year, underscoring the growing shift towards clean mobility.

The government’s Gatishakti programme is working to expand CNG availability nationwide and pilot LNG adoption for heavy-duty trucks. Chandra added that the association is continuing its efforts on the vehicle scrappage policy to build a recycling-led circular economy.

Hydrogen is also emerging as a focus area, with SIAM rolling out pilot projects for buses and trucks powered by green hydrogen. Road safety remains another priority, with campaigns aimed at creating safer mobility for citizens.
