While a commercial four-wheeler driver paid INR 35,000 as fine, a two-wheeler rider had to shell out Rs 15,000

A citywide crackdown by the Regional Transport Office (RTO) has raked in nearly INR 1 crore in fines over the last two weeks, targeting 2,600 vehicle owners.

The operations uncovered widespread violations, with many drivers facing hefty fines for multiple offences.

Most of the violators rode two-wheelers.

The officials said that, on average, each detained vehicle cost its owner over INR 3,800 in fines. The RTO officials checked not just for current violations but also for pending challans, insurance validity, and Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates. On average, each vehicle owner had at least two pending challans.

JJ Patel, Ahmedabad RTO, said, “We collected fines nearing INR 1 crore. Alongside violations, drivers were required to clear outstanding challans and ensure valid PUC and insurance to reclaim their vehicles.”

The combing operation, conducted between November 25 and 29, saw the city police issuing over 7,400 memos and registering 397 cases under the Motor Vehicle Act. Over 750 memos were issued in just the first two days. The penalties also doubled for repeat offenders, making compliance an even costlier affair.
