  • 30 years ago today Jimmy Vasser won the US 500, a rival race to the Indianapolis 500 run by CART which its teams entered due to a political row. A formation lap crash involving Vasser and several others marred the race. Meanwhile Buddy Lazier won the Indy 500.
  • Vittorio Brambilla died on this day in 2001
