Lando Norris, McLaren, Red Bull Ring, 2025

Lando Norris was quickest as he returned to the cockpit of his McLaren for the first time since he crashed out of the Canadian Grand Prix.

Having missed the first practice session while Alex Dunne drove his car, Norris displaced Oscar Piastri from the top of the times as the pair became the first drivers to dip beneath the 65 second mark at the Red Bull Ring this weekend. Norris gained on the other McLaren in all three sectors around the compact Austrian track, coming out ahead by 0.157 seconds.

Max Verstappen was the only other driver who got into the 1’04s. As in the opening session, he performed two very slow laps between runs on the soft tyres to prepare them for his quickest run. He ended up three tenths of a second off Norris.

The two drivers who clashed controversially in this race last year had a brief interaction as Norris passed Verstappen’s slow Red Bull on the climb to turn three. With ample room to the right of the Red Bull, Norris opted to pass Verstappen on the left, prompting a bemused reaction from the champion.

Lewis Hamilton and his Mercedes replacement Andrea Kimi Antonelli had a nearer miss on the approach to turn four. The Ferrari driver drifted towards the racing line as Antonelli approached, forcing the Mercedes driver to take evasive action. Hamilton told his race engineer he had been unable to see the car bearing down on him and the stewards took note of the incident.

The pair ended up in the middle of the times sheet, Hamilton 10th ahead of the rookie. Ahead of them, Lance Stroll surprised with the fourth-fastest time for Aston Martin. Charles Leclerc, the quickest of the Ferrari drivers, was unable to beat the time, as was first practice pace setter George Russell in the other Mercedes.

Yuki Tsunoda put his Red Bull seventh, albeit only seven hundredths of a second ahead of Gabriel Bortoleto’s Sauber. Fernando Alonso put the other Aston Martin ninth ahead of Hamilton.
