The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) plans to introduce an artificial intelligence (AI)-based dashcam monitoring system across around 40,000 km of the national highway network, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said on Friday.
The system, referred to as Dashcam Analytics Services (DAS), will use AI and machine learning tools to support operations and maintenance of highways and expressways.
Under the initiative, dashboard cameras will be installed on Route Patrol Vehicles (RPVs) to carry out weekly surveys of highway stretches. The system will capture high-resolution images and video data for remote monitoring and road condition assessment.AI models will be used to identify more than 30 types of defects and anomalies. These include pavement-related issues such as potholes, rutting and cracks, as well as problems with road infrastructure like lane markings, crash barriers and streetlights. The system will also monitor safety-related concerns, including illegal median openings, unauthorised signboards, encroachments and improper parking.
Focus on safety and maintenance
NHAI said at least one survey each month will be conducted at night to assess the condition of road signage, lighting and pavement markings. Other maintenance issues such as water stagnation, missing drainage covers, vegetation growth and the condition of bus bays will also be recorded. To manage the data, the authority has divided the country into five zones and plans to use a dedicated IT platform with modules for data management, analytics and visual dashboards. The system will also allow comparisons of road conditions over time to track maintenance progress.
The AI-generated data will be integrated into NHAI’s central data platform to support monitoring and timely repairs, the ministry said.
The deployment is aimed at improving monitoring and maintenance processes through data-driven methods. According to the ministry, the use of AI-based dashcam systems is expected to support timely identification of issues and improve road safety across the national highway network.
