There will be no new Formula 1 game for major platforms next year for the first time since Codemasters took over the franchise in 2009.
Franchise owner EA has confirmed the 2026 roster of drivers, cars and teams will be offered as paid-for downloadable content for owners of this year’s game, F1 25.
The update will add next year’s new sporting regulations alongside the grid’s expansion to 22 cars as Cadillac arrives. However it will not include the new addition to the 2026 F1 calendar, the Madring street circuit in Spain.
The next full new edition of the game will arrive in 2027. EA says this will offer “a deeply authentic and innovative representation of the action and thrill of Formula 1, reimagined into a more expansive experience with new ways to play for fans around the world.”
The decision to postpone the next full game until 2027 is a product of EA’s strategy to develop the game as part of its multi-year deal with Formula One Management.
“Built for the rapidly evolving and globally expanding nature of F1 fandom, with more than a third of fans having entered the sport in the last four years, the refreshed experience will expand on what long-time players have loved from the franchise,” it added, “and celebrate the passion of Formula 1 through a game that immerses both new and longtime players in the modern era of the sport.”
Codemasters’ senior creative director Lee Mather said: “With Formula 1’s momentum on and off the track, now is the perfect time for us to look ahead and build for the future.
“We’re fully committed to the EA Sports F1 franchise. Our multi-year plan extends this year’s excitement with the 2026 expansion and reimagines the F1 experience for 2027 to deliver even more for players at every level around the world.”
