Mahanagar Gas Ltd has increased the retail price of compressed natural gas (CNG) by ₹2 per kg across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), making the fuel costlier from Saturday, according to a report by The Economic Times.
The company also raised the price of piped natural gas (PNG) used for cooking by 50 paise per unit, impacting households as well as public transport users across the region.
The latest revision raises the price of CNG to ₹86 per kg from ₹84 per kg in Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai and other parts of MMR. The price of PNG has been revised to ₹52 per unit, affecting more than 31 lakh households.
An MGL official told The Times of India on Friday that gas procurement costs had risen because of geopolitical disruptions affecting global energy supply chains, higher dependence on expensive gas sources, rising crude oil prices and rupee depreciation.
The latest increase is expected to strengthen demands from auto-rickshaw and taxi unions for a fare revision.
Mumbai Rickshawmen’s Union leader Thampy Kurien told the newspaper that a fresh review under the fare revision formula indicated a possible increase of around ₹1 per kilometre in base fares.
According to the report, the transport department is expected to send the fare hike proposal to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority (MMRTA), which takes the final decision on fare revisions. Taxi unions have also sought a ₹2–3 increase in base fares, citing higher CNG prices over the past year.
This is the second increase in CNG prices in Mumbai in May. MGL had raised CNG prices by ₹2 on May 13, following a ₹1 increase in April.
The company said CNG remains cheaper than conventional fuels despite the latest revision.
The increase is expected to affect a large part of Mumbai’s transport network, where CNG is widely used for public transport and last-mile connectivity.
The number of CNG vehicles in the Mumbai region has crossed 12 lakh, up by nearly two lakh vehicles over the past year. This includes around 4.7 lakh auto-rickshaws, over 1.6 lakh taxis and more than five lakh private cars across Mumbai, Thane, Mira-Bhayander, Navi Mumbai and Raigad.
MGL also supplies CNG to 1,969 buses operated by Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport, Thane Municipal Transport, Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation and Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport, in addition to over 51,000 privately operated buses and goods vehicles running on CNG across the region.
