McLaren told both their drivers to avoid colliding with each other as they fought for victory in the final laps of the Hungarian Grand Prix.
A radio message to Oscar Piastri from his race engineer Tom Stallard warning him not to take too many risks was played on the world television feed during the grand prix.
However team principal Andrea Stella confirmed they also gave a warning to Lando Norris as he attempted to resist his team mate’s attacks as the final laps ticked down.
“The reminder was for both,” Stella told the official Formula 1 channel. “One, to make sure you don’t dive into the inside too aggressively. The other one, don’t move under braking.”
Piastri locked his brakes hard at turn one at the beginning of the penultimate lap and came close to hitting Norris. However Stella said he was happy with the respect his drivers showed to each other during their fight.
“They are [fighting for] a victory while they are in a quest for the drivers’ championship so I think it’s fair that they try their best,” he said, “but all this should happen within our principles and preserving the good racing, which means both McLaren finishing, P1 and P2.”
He said the team “loved watching” the fight between the pair. “We are McLaren Racing, we’re here to race. Today there was great racing.

“It was firm, it was intense. Two cars with pretty much the same pace, going for two different strategies, which were pretty equivalent. And it ended up with some very close racing at the end.
“And a P1 and P2 for McLaren, so a great day. This is also victory number 200 for McLaren, which makes me very proud, very privileged to be witnessing.”
