The McLaren drivers were impressed by the performance of rivals Ferrari, whose cars split them in the second practice session at Silverstone.
Lando Norris headed the second practice session with what he described as “a very strong lap.” However Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton were next in their SF-25s.
“In general the Ferraris have been very, very quick today and they shall be tomorrow,” Norris told the official F1 channel after practice. “So I think we have a bit of work to do, to be honest.
“It looked maybe a bit ‘too good’ today. Ferrari always catch up into [third practice] like they did last weekend. So I’d say I’m pleased with today, but nothing to be too proud about just yet.”
Ferrari’s drivers haven’t had a pole position or a win so far this year. Oscar Piastri said “it was a bit of a surprise” to find the Ferrari in between them, and said they appear to be in good shape for qualifying and the race.
“They looked good, both in the qualifying runs and the longer runs as well,” said Piastri. “So I think they’re in the fight this weekend which is interesting to see.”
Ferrari introduced a floor upgrade for their car in Austria and delivered their best qualifying performance of the season. Leclerc took second on the grid, two places ahead of Hamilton. The pair finished the race third and fourth.

Piastri was almost half a second slower than Norris in practice. “The soft tyre [lap] was a little bit messy for me,” he said.
“But I think the potential is definitely there and the long runs look pretty solid as well,” added Piastri. “So an interesting first day and I think a lot of competition.”
