In a major push to promote green mobility, Maharashtra government has announced a complete toll exemption for passenger electric vehicles (EVs) on Nagpur-Mumbai Hindu Hrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Samruddhi Mahamarg. The decision comes under the newly revised Maharashtra Electric Vehicle Policy 2025, notified on August 29.The policy, first declared in May, aims to encourage wider EV adoption by providing demand-side incentives, with toll waivers being a critical step. Alongside the Samruddhi Expressway, the toll exemption will also extend to Mumbai-Pune Yashwantrao Chavan Expressway and Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewri-Nhava Sheva Atal Setu.Officials said the exemption will not only reduce travel costs for EV owners but also serve as a “live demonstration of sustainable transport connectivity” between key cities like Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur. The Samruddhi Mahamarg, which directly links Mumbai and Nagpur over a 701km stretch, is expected to become a model corridor for clean transport, with the government actively promoting it as a showcase for EV-friendly infrastructure. The notification further clarifies that the financial burden of reimbursing toll operators will be met through budgetary allocations from the transport department, routed to the concerned departments and authorities. The government believes this initiative will boost confidence among EV buyers in tier-II cities like Nagpur, where adoption was slower compared to metros. “By exempting tolls on the state’s most important expressways, the government is sending a strong signal to accelerate EV adoption across Maharashtra,” a senior official said. The move is also expected to support the Centre’s push for cleaner transport and reduce vehicular emissions along the state’s busiest long-distance corridors.
