Madhur Bajaj, former vice-chairman of Bajaj Auto, passed away on Friday at the age of 73. He played an integral role in the development of Bajaj Auto and was a driving force in India’s motorised two- and three-wheeler sectors.
ETAuto had earlier reported that Madhur Bajaj stepped down from his position as non-executive director and vice-chairman of Bajaj Auto in January 2024 due to health reasons. He was associated with the company as its director for 23 years {including erstwhile Bajaj Auto Ltd.) & vice chairman {executive & non executive VC) for 23 years. “I believe now is the time for me to pursue my other interests and commitments,” he had said while stepping down.
Madhur Bajaj was the first cousin of Rahul Bajaj, the man behind the Indian conglomerate Bajaj Group. Rahul Bajaj died in February 2022 at the age of 83. While the exact cause of Madhur Bajaj’s demise is unknown, it is believed to be age-related.
The 73-year-old veteran was regarded as one of India’s most prominent business leaders and a pioneer in the automotive industry. At the time of his passing, he was serving as a non-executive director at Bajaj Auto Ltd.
His legacy
Born on August 19, 1952, Madhur Bajaj was an alumnus of Doon School, Dehradun. He earned his B.Com degree from Sydenham College, Bombay, and later pursued an MBA at the International Institute of Management Development (IMD), Switzerland.He left a lasting mark across the auto, consumer durables, and financial services sectors, earning multiple accolades for his contributions. Among them was the ‘Vikas Rattan’ Award from the International Friendship Society of India for enriching human life and his outstanding achievements.He also served as the president of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) and the Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture (MCCIA).
Most recently, he served as the chairman of the CII’s Western region and was a National Council Member of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). In addition, he also held key leadership roles such as chairman of Maharashtra Scooters and Director at Bajaj Electricals Limited, Bajaj Finance, and several other companies within the Bajaj Group.
