The March 31 deadline to procure high-security registration plates (HSRP) for all vehicles registered before April 1, 2019 could be extended, a state transport department source said.
The official said, “More than two crore vehicles of all kinds in the state will have to get these new plates by March 31. We expect govt to extend the deadline.”
In Pune regional transport office’s (RTO) jurisdiction, 24.28 lakh vehicles will have to go through the process. Till date, only 5,014 vehicles have got the HSRPs, officials said.
Pune deputy RTO Swapnil Bhosle told TOI, “A total of 15,116 people have applied, of which 8,090 appointments have been given, and 5,014 people have got the HSRPs for their vehicles. Compared to the total number of vehicles which need to have them by March-end, this number is poor.”
A few days ago, sources in Pimpri Chinchwad RTO office said that there were thousands of vehicles under their jurisdiction which have to change their registration numbers. RTO Sandesh Chavan told TOI some days ago that only 1,151 vehicles have HSRPs, but 7,835 appointments have been booked.
Bhosle said the RTO office would have a help desk from the next month for people finding it difficult to register and get appointments.
“If the deadline does not change, we will start taking action against vehicles which have old registration plates. The action will be decided by the state transport department,” he added.
The help desk in Pune will be operational from the second week of Feb. “People can meet the team and its members will help them register and get appointments. They should come with their vehicle documents so that the job becomes easier,” another Pune RTO official said.
Kothrud resident Vasant Kamble said he has an appointment for Feb-end and a friend has it in the first week of March. “The deadline has to be extended by at least two months as there are a large number of vehicles and time is short,” he added.
Keshav Kshirsagar, president of Bagtoy Rickshawala Autorickshaw Union, said there are more than 1.50 lakh autorickshaws in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad and 90% of owners don’t know how to use computers. “A manual system of applications should be introduced and the deadline should be extended,” he added.
