The state police are considering action against NHAI officials for alleged negligence following the tragic LPG tanker accident on Ajmer-Jaipur NH48 last Friday, which claimed 13 lives and reignited the demand for robust safety measures to prevent future tragedies.

The accident occurred near Bhankrota at a median cut used for U-turns to Jaipur’s Ring Road. A collision between a truck and an LPG tanker triggered a massive fire. Police officers said Monday that NHAI was instructed to install high-mast lights at the location to enhance visibility, but no action was taken.

“After the accident, we requested NHAI to install reflectors, road lights, and high-mast lights. Jaipur police deployed traffic officers at the spot, but the necessary safety measures from NHAI were not implemented,” said a police officer.

According to the officer, insufficient safety infrastructure led to the disaster. “The lack of fire hydrants, ambulance services, and the open median cut have raised serious concerns. NHAI’s inaction may lead to formal action against its officials,” the officer said.

This is not the first time police have criticised NHAI for safety lapses. In 2023, Jaipur (Rural) SP Rajeev Pachar and ASP Dinesh Kumar Sharma wrote to NHAI about toll plazas on Jaipur-Ajmer highway causing congestion due to poor road conditions and prolonged construction delays. Police urged NHAI to halt toll collection at Thikariya, Bagru, and Kishangarh until the problems were solved.

Jaipur traffic DCPs have also flagged NHAI’s failure to construct cloverleaves or alternative routes to facilitate smooth entry and exit between NH48 and Ring Road. These remain unfinished four years after the southern arm of Ring Road was inaugurated in Nov 2020, forcing vehicles to take dangerous U-turns at Bhankrota and Mahapura, which have become accident hotspots.

After Friday’s accident, emergency response delays highlighted additional shortcomings such as non-functional SOS systems and a lack of hydrants and cranes. Ambulances had to be summoned from multiple locations, slowing treatment for burn patients.
