The residents of Parbhani in Maharashtra on Sunday observed ‘No Vehicle Day‘ in response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s austerity appeal amid the West Asia crisis, the district administration said.
Amid the war involving the US, Israel and Iran, Modi has suggested reducing petrol and diesel consumption, using metro rail services in cities, carpooling, increased use of EVs, utilising railway services for parcel movement and working from home to conserve foreign exchange.
“Responding to the ‘Saptasutri’ (seven-point) guidelines outlined by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, citizens across the city voluntarily kept their motorized vehicles off the roads. Instead, a large number of people opted for bicycles, walking, or utilizing public transport for their daily commutes today in Parbhani,” the district administration’s release said.
The impact of the initiative was visible across various parts of the city since morning, with a noticeable reduction in vehicular traffic, the release said.
Parbhani district guardian minister Meghna Sakore-Bordikar said the response given by the residents for national interest, fuel saving, and environmental conservation was truly inspiring.
“The social commitment shown by the citizens is highly commendable. I urge everyone to show similar enthusiasm for the ‘No Vehicle Day’ next Sunday as well,” Bordikar added.
