The Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs (IICA) and the Carbon Market Association of India (CMAI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in New Delhi to strengthen India’s carbon markets and accelerate decarbonisation efforts. The agreement was announced on the inaugural day of the IICA-CMAI Masterclass on Global & Indian Carbon Markets on February 4.
Union Minister for Road, Transport & Highways Nitin Gadkari emphasised the role of biofuels and green hydrogen in India’s economic and environmental strategies. He said, “Hydrogen is fuel for the future.” He also stated that India aims to achieve hydrogen production at $1 per kg, adding that research and development initiatives in this sector will support this goal.
Gadkari highlighted pilot projects related to Bio Bitumin, Bio Aviation Fuel, and Bio CNG, stating that “Conversion of knowledge into wealth is the future, and no material is waste.” He said that the government remains committed to developing a diversified biofuels sector and that India will soon become a Green Hydrogen exporting country.
IICA and CMAI will collaborate on training programs, joint research, workshops, and policy advocacy to support India’s net-zero goals. CMAI will serve as a knowledge partner to IICA, a think tank under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, to facilitate the development of the corporate sector.
IICA’s Head of the School of Business Environment, Garima Dadhich, said that the IICA Certificate Programme in Decarbonisation will focus on equipping corporate professionals with expertise in carbon offset mechanisms and long-term decarbonisation strategies.
CMAI President Manish Dabkara said, “The MoU with IICA marks a significant step towards building a robust ecosystem for carbon markets in India. Training programs, research opportunities, workshops, and conferences are a huge part of accelerating sustainable business initiatives. CMAI is looking forward to a successful partnership in this area.”
CMAI Secretary General Rohit Kumar said that awareness has been a major challenge in this sector and that combining CMAI’s industry expertise with IICA’s institutional strength will create impactful learning opportunities to accelerate India’s transition to a low-carbon economy.
The first day of the Masterclass saw participation from over 70 professionals from corporates, PSUs, governmental bodies, embassies, and international organisations. Experts from ERM India and IICA’s School of Business Environment led discussions.
The second day of the Masterclass will focus on International Carbon Markets and discussions on global carbon trading mechanisms.
