Lewis Hamilton, Ferrari, Zandvoort, 2025

Lewis Hamilton was at a loss to explain his crash after retiring from the Dutch Grand Prix.

The Ferrari driver crashed out on the 23rd lap of the race. He ran wide in the steeply banked Hugenholzbocht and clipped the barrier on the outside of the corner.

“I’m so sorry, guys,” Hamilton told his team before walking back to the garage. It is his first retirement from a race since he joined Ferrari at the beginning of the year.

Afterwards Hamilton said he couldn’t understand how he’d lost control of the car. “I’m really not sure,” he told Sky. “I’ll have to look back at it, but as I went up the bank the rear snapped out and I couldn’t recover.”

Hamilton spun twice in practice but qualified seventh, just one place behind team mate Charles Leclerc. He said he felt happier with the car this weekend and had been urging his team to bring him in for an early pit stop shortly before he crashed.

“It was a bit twitchy, the car, but I think we made real progress this weekend and my pace was looking pretty decent,” Hamilton said. “I was catching George [Russell] and I think I had the pace of a few cars ahead of me.

“But it’s very unusual to not finish a race and so early, to go out so so early. So it’s definitely not great, but it is what it is.”
