Hamilton hoped to avoid a penalty for corner-cutting

Lewis Hamilton was demoted one place after the Singapore Grand Prix for repeatedly exceeding the track limits.

The Ferrari driver struggled to reach the end of the race after being struck by a severe braking problem.

He was overtaken by Andrea Kimi Antonelli and let team mate Charles Leclerc past. With two laps to go he had over 43 seconds in hand over the next driver behind him, Fernando Alonso, but he was losing time at a terrific rate.

Hamilton’s race engineer Ricardo Adami advised him to reduce his speed as far as possible to increase the cooling to his brakes and help them recover. But doing this around one of the hardest circuits for brakes on the calendar cost him a huge amount of time.

Hamilton’s radio messages after his brake failure

Having stayed on the track all race until this point, Hamilton began diving onto the run-off areas at some corners. In some cases this appeared to be because his brakes hadn’t slowed him down enough and he ran wide.

However he also cut the inside of several corners. When Adami warned him not to do this, Hamilton quickly replied: “I’m not trying to cut the course, mate.”

Lap: 59/62 HAM: 1’39.167, OCO: 1’38.154
HamiltonBrakes are not good
HamiltonI need to push now though.
AdamiUnderstood.
HamiltonPedal’s going long. It’s still good
AdamiUnderstood
HamiltonLosing my brakes, mate.
AdamiOkay, we suggest lift-and-coast for brakes.
HamiltonYeah I’m doing it, big time.
HamiltonLost my brakes. Lost my left-front.
Lap: 60/62 HAM: 1’40.466, OCO: 1’39.143
AdamiCool down the brakes, they will come back. They are cooling down
HamiltonLost my brakes, mate.
AdamiUnderstood. Just cool them down and let Charles by. He’s coming through now, let him by.

Lap: 61/62 HAM: 2’08.668, OCO: 1’38.814
AdamiWe’ve got 30 seconds gap, two cars behind. Four cars behind are blue flags.
AdamiTwo laps to go.
AdamiAlonso 45 seconds behind.
AdamiAlonso 37 seconds behind.
HamiltonSuggestions for brake balance?
AdamiWhat you are doing, just move it rearwards much as you can and engine braking as you are doing. Alonso 16 seconds behind, one more lap. And [brake migration] one.
Lap: 62/62 HAM: 1’47.713, OCO:
AdamiAlonso 10 seconds behind.
AdamiDon’t, don’t cut the corners
HamiltonI’m not trying to cut the course, mate
AdamiUnderstood. Alonso five behind.
AdamiAlonso 2.5 behind
HamiltonJust me to it mate, leave me to it.

As Alonso neared him on the final lap, Hamilton increased his pace. He made sure not to cut turn 16 or 17 as they went through the final time and pipped Alonso to the finishing line by less than half a second.

Alonso was enraged that his rival had saved time by repeatedly cutting the track (a tactic he used at another track in 2018).

However the stewards did not overlook Hamilton’s repeated track limits infringements. They announced his five-second time penalty a while after the race, but Ferrari evidently knew it was inevitable once they saw he’d collected four strikes for running wide.

Adami told Hamilton on his in-lap he would be penalised. Hamilton hopefully replied: “Surely there’s no penalty when it’s force majeure?” But he was to be disappointed: the penalty dropped him from seventh to eighth behind Alonso.

Chequered flag
AdamiAnd try to come back in, very slow.
AdamiHow many positions did I lose?
AdamiWe finished P9 [sic] because we got five seconds penalty for track limits
HamiltonI couldn’t stop the car, man, my brakes don’t work. Pedal was to the floor
AdamiCharge button on.
HamiltonSurely there’s no penalty when it’s force majeure? That’s one of the first times… first time I’ve had brake failure That’s definitely difficult. Sorry to lose the points but I was trying.
AdamiYeah definitely, we’ve had a strong recovery there, strong race overall. And back to the pit lane.
AdamiP0 reminder, please. Thank you.
Hamilton[Unclear] for all the hard work, guys. Can’t get the rewards we deserve. [Unclear]
