New Delhi: The Delhi government will invest ₹170 crore to modernise 15 industrial training institutes (ITIs) under a ‘Hub and Spoke’ model with a focus on emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics, electric mobility and green energy, Industries Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said on Thursday.

According to a PTI report, the announcement was made during the regional conference of skill ministers convened in Chandigarh by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), according to a statement from the minister’s office.

Roadmap of the investment

Under the plan, ITIs at Pusa, Shahdara and Mangolpuri will serve as hub institutes, each guiding up to four ‘spoke’ campuses on infrastructure upgrades, curriculum development, faculty training and industry linkages. Course modules will be updated to include AI, robotics, EV maintenance and sustainable energy technologies.

Sirsa said the ₹170 crore funding will be dovetailed with the Centre’s ₹60,000 crore national scheme for ITI upgradation. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for ‘Skill, Scale, Speed and Samman’ is our guiding compass. Delhi’s upgraded ITIs will equip our youths with 21st-century competencies so that they graduate as job creators, not just job seekers,” he said.

The government plans to set up special purpose vehicles to pool contributions from the Centre, the Delhi government and industry partners, with transparent, milestone-linked fund release. Smart classrooms, simulation labs, blended-learning content, mandatory internships and apprenticeship-enabled diploma pathways will be introduced across campuses.

Parallelly, Delhi is also building Centres of Excellence (CoEs) at ITIs in Dheerpur, Mayur Vihar and Pusa, offering training in industrial automation, robotics and advanced welding. Under the PM Vishwakarma Yojana, more than 1,300 artisans have already been trained across ITIs, while initiatives like Jan Shikshan Sansthan in Jahangirpuri have benefited over 1,000 women.

Sirsa further said that apprenticeship-enabled degree programmes will soon be launched at Delhi Skill and Entrepreneurship University and Delhi Technical University to expand career pathways for students>
