New Delhi: Delhi’s electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure has witnessed what officials termed a “record” expansion over the last one year, with the total number of charging points rising to over 10,000, including more than 3,000 added in the past few months.

According to PTI, Delhi power minister Ashish Sood attributed the growth to policy clarity and faster execution under the new government, and said the draft EV policy places special focus on scaling up charging infrastructure.

“Under the draft EV policy of the government, there is special focus on expansion of charging infrastructure and we will ensure an adequate number of public charging stations to meet the growth of electric vehicles in the city,” Sood told PTI.

He added that the power department is strengthening transmission and distribution infrastructure to meet rising charging demand expected with the implementation of the new EV policy.

BSES discoms, which supply electricity across South, West, East and Central Delhi, said they facilitated installation of a record number of charging points in FY2025-26. A BSES official said the utility installed over 1,600 EV charging points and battery swapping stations across 1,241 locations during the year — the highest ever in a single year.

Strong EV charging ecosystem

So far, BRPL and BYPL together have installed over 6,500 EV charging points and battery swapping stations across more than 3,400 locations.

According to BSES data, the installed base includes 3,217 private charging points (49 per cent) across 2,273 locations, 2,870 public charging points (44 per cent) across 838 locations, and 465 captive charging points (7 per cent) across 314 locations. Battery swapping stations account for 340 installations, or 5 per cent of the overall network.

The official said domestic connections make up 50–60 per cent of private charging installations, while RWAs and group housing societies account for 15–20 per cent, and commercial establishments for 20–25 per cent.

Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL), which supplies power in North Delhi, said it has energised 3,783 EV connections so far, of which 1,641 connections were added in FY2025-26. The additions included 42 public charging stations and 15 battery swapping stations.

TPDDL said North Delhi localities such as Rohini, Pitampura, Civil Lines, Model Town and Shalimar Bagh have emerged as major demand hubs, contributing nearly 63 per cent of total installations. It added that Bawana, Narela and Kirari present significant potential for future expansion.

“We aim to facilitate 3,000 additional EV charging stations in the coming year by providing the necessary power connections,” a TPDDL spokesperson said.

The charging load in BSES areas has risen sharply, standing at 227.48 MW currently and projected to reach 375 MW over the next two years. The EV charging load has surged from 24 MW in FY2018-19 to over 227 MW at present, marking nearly a nine-fold increase.

According to the latest Central Electricity Authority (CEA) report, Delhi accounts for 24.1 per cent of India’s total EV public charging electricity consumption, recording 239.63 million units (MUs) out of 992.73 MUs nationally. Delhi ranks first in EV charging electricity consumption, ahead of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and Telangana.

In Delhi, BSES contributes 124.20 MUs, accounting for 52 per cent of the city’s EV charging consumption and 12.5 per cent of national consumption, the official said.
