In the absence of a fully compliant FASTag, a Bengaluru-Mangaluru trip will cost close to ₹1,000, instead of the regular ₹500 one-way toll.

In the absence of a fully compliant FASTag, a Bengaluru-Mangaluru trip will cost close to ₹1,000, instead of the regular ₹500 one-way toll.

If you purchased a new vehicle last month, get ready to pay double the toll. New vehicles that cannot have the FASTags attached activated immediately owing to KYC issues, are being blacklisted and tolled double the normal amount.

Previously, completing KYC for FASTag activation required the vehicle’s registration number and other relevant details for uploading.

However, it is now mandatory to submit identity and address proof such as Aadhaar or PAN card details, along with the vehicle’s registration certificate (RC). This is due to recent mandates from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and the RBI to prevent fraud and ensure compliance.

Adding to the woes, obtaining a Smart RC from the RTO involves a waiting period of at least two-four weeks, leading to delay and, hence, blacklisting of FASTag.

RTO sources say various issues such as staff shortage due to the recently concluded caste census work, heavy festive season bookings, bulk printing of Smart RC, and data co-ordination have resulted in a delay.

According to car dealers, while all banks require RC for FASTag authentication and activation, one bank has, however, found a workaround with a condition that the FASTag sticker must be pasted on the windshield and RC details uploaded in about two months (once received), providing some relief to vehicle owners.
