NOIDA: Scattered rainfall throughout Friday improved air quality in the region to u2018poor’, even as it had slipped into the u2018very poor’ level in the morning.
While the city’s average AQI at 4pm was 329 (very poor), air quality data recorded at the four monitoring stations showed significant improvement towards the evening. At Sector 62 station, AQI improved from 314 recorded at 8am to 302 by 4pm and 291 by 6pm.
The Sector 125 station recorded an AQI of 233 at 8pm, significantly better than 278 recorded at 8am. At 6pm, the station’s AQI was recorded at 255 and at 4pm at 267.
At Sector 1, where AQI touch the upper levels of u2018very poor’ at 386 around 8am, air quality improved significantly to 326 by 8pm.
At 315, air quality was recorded in the lower rungs of u2018very poor’ at Sector 116 station around 8pm, after it touched 374 at 4pm and 417 (severe) at 8am.
The Commission for Air Quality Management in NCR and adjoining areas (CAQM) revoked pollution curbs including restriction on the plying of BS III petrol and BS IV diesel vehicles and the ban on construction and demolition activities, stone crushers, and mining activities under GRAP Stage 3 after Delhi’s AQI also dipped below 350 (very poor) on Friday evening.
Delhi’s Air Quality Index was 353 at 4 pm, which dipped to 334 at 7 pm.
The Supreme Court earlier said stage III should be imposed when the AQI crosses 350, as against the original threshold of 400. It similarly asked Stage 4 restrictions to be imposed when AQI touched 400, as opposed to the original threshold of 450.
As the rain caused the AQI to dip below 350 on Friday evening, CAQM removed the stringent measures under Stage 3.
In Greater Noida, the average AQI at 4pm was recorded at 260 compared to Thursday’s 280. The AQI at Knowledge Park 3 monitoring station improved to 222 (poor) around 8pm, significantly better than the 263 recorded at 8am. At Knowledge Park 5 station, AQI was 318 (very poor) at 8am. It improved to 285 (poor) at 4pm and was at 248 at 8pm.
Ghaziabad’s average AQI at 4pm was 262. By 8pm, AQI at Vasundhara station was 228, Loni 252, and Indirapuram 286, all in u2018poor’ category. Sanjay Nagar station’s AQI was 191 (moderate) at 8pm.
The lifting of the ban on C&D activity is likely to provide a huge relief to daily-wage labourers who were badly impacted with no source of income. The restriction on plying of Delhi-registered diesel-operated Medium Goods Vehicles (MGVs) in Delhi, and diesel-operated Light Commercial Vehicles (goods carriers), registered outside Delhi, has been relaxed now. As part of stage III, diesel-operated MGVs and goods carriers, which were of BS-IV or below standard, were earlier barred.
This is the second time stage III of GRAP has been removed this winter season. It was first implemented from Nov 15 to Dec 4. It was again invoked on Dec 16. However, stages I and II will continue to remain in force. Under stage II, there is a restriction on inter-state buses from NCR states, other than EVs/CNG/BS-VI Diesel, to enter Delhi (excluding buses/Tempo Travellers operated with All India Tourist Permit).
