Franco Colapinto, Alpine, Red Bull Ring, 2025

Franco Colapinto was given a penalty point on his licence for forcing Oscar Piastri off the track while being lapped by the McLaren driver.

Piastri had just made a pit stop when he emerged behind Colapinto, who was trying to pass Yuki Tsunoda ahead of him.

After Colapinto made an unsuccessful attempt to overtake Tsunoda at turn three, Piastri drew along the right-hand side of the Alpine driver. However Colapinto kept to the racing line and moved across on the McLaren, forcing him off.

The stewards acknowledged Colapinto could not see the McLaren driver easily and therefore issued him a more lenient penalty. He was given a five-second penalty plus a penalty point on his licence, which is his third to date.

“The team informed the driver of car 43 [Colapinto] about blue flags for car 81 [Piastri],” noted the stewards. “However, after exiting turn three, car 43 forced car 81 off track on the inside.

“The stewards acknowledge that it was very hard for the driver of car 43 to see car 81 due to the position of car 22 in turn three and take this into account in mitigation.”

Colapinto was cleared over another incident in the race when he appeared to force Oliver Bearman off on the outside of the same corner when he came under attack by the Haas driver. The stewards ruled Colapinto had the right to hold his line.

“Car 87 [Bearman] attempted an overtake on the outside on car 43 into turn three, but did not have its front axle ahead of the front axle of car 43 at the apex as required by the Driving Standards Guidelines,” they ruled.

“Therefore the stewards determine that car 43 was entitled to use the regular racing line without the necessity to leave space for car 87 on the outside and car 87 had to concede.”
