Light Electric Vehicles (LEVs) are quickly gaining traction worldwide due to their eco-friendly and efficient nature. These vehicles, including electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers, play a crucial role in reducing emissions and supporting sustainable urban mobility. However, a major challenge remains in the development of effective charging solutions that cater to varying regional needs and standards.

During the 9th edition of the ETAuto Conclave, Kevin Ng, Chief Strategy Officer and Group Vice President of Chogori Technology, emphasised the importance of adapting to the rapidly changing landscape of LEVs.

Innovation in charging solutions across regions

Charging infrastructure for LEVs varies across countries, reflecting differences in adoption rates, vehicle types, and local policies. For example, in India and China, battery swapping has become a popular solution for quick turnarounds, especially for vehicles used in high-demand sectors like the “Boda Boda” motorcycle taxis in Africa. Charging solutions are also influenced by local infrastructure. In Southeast Asia and Africa, rugged environments demand connectors that are waterproof and durable to withstand extreme conditions. Meanwhile, in Europe and Japan, fast-charging infrastructure is increasingly being implemented, often with connectors that support higher amperage for quicker charging times.

The challenge of standardisation in LEV charging

One of the ongoing challenges in the global landscape is the lack of standardised charging solutions. While some regions have adopted Type 6 and Type 7 connectors, no universal standards have yet been agreed upon. Companies are adapting their solutions to the varying needs of the market while contributing to the global conversation on standardisation.

Kevin Ng shared, “We don’t set any of these standards. We just work on supporting the market and the customers based on what they need us to do.” This highlights Chogori’s emphasis on creating charging solutions that adapt to market demands and comply with global standards, ensuring they are suitable and reliable for various LEV applications.

The global growth of LEVs relies heavily on the continued evolution of charging infrastructure. As adoption increases, the standardisation of these solutions will be key to enabling seamless and efficient global mobility.
