The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has invoked Stage-I of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) across Delhi-NCR with immediate effect after air quality deteriorated to the ‘poor’ category. Delhi’s daily average air quality index (AQI) was recorded at 226, placing it in the ‘poor’ range (201–300), according to the Central Pollution Control Board.
The decision was taken after a review of air quality trends and meteorological forecasts by the India Meteorological Department and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, which indicated that AQI levels are likely to remain in the ‘poor’ category over the next two days.
CAQM said all 31 measures under Stage-I of GRAP will be implemented across the National Capital Region to prevent further deterioration in air quality.
Key measures include strict enforcement of dust control norms at construction sites, mechanised road sweeping and water sprinkling, prohibition on open burning of waste, and enhanced monitoring of industrial emissions.
Authorities have also been directed to ensure compliance with vehicle emission norms, prevent use of diesel generator sets, and improve traffic management to reduce congestion and emissions.
The plan also calls for increased public transport services, stricter enforcement against polluting vehicles and industrial units, and public awareness measures on pollution control.
CAQM said agencies including pollution control boards and the Delhi Pollution Control Committee will monitor implementation of the measures, while urging citizens to cooperate and follow prescribed guidelines.
The sub-committee will continue to review the situation and take further action based on AQI levels and forecasts.
