Colton Herta, Andretti, Portland, 2025

Cadillac Formula 1 test driver Colton Herta will race for Hitech in Formula 2 next year, the team has announced.

The multiple IndyCar race-winner announced earlier this year he is leaving the series to race in F2, which offers far more of the FIA superlicence points he needs to qualify to race in F1.

Aged 25, Herta is older than every driver on the current F2 grid except for 26-year-old Ritomo Miyata.

“This is an amazing opportunity to develop my skills in European racing and to measure myself against some of the best young drivers in the world,” said Herta. “Racing on the same weekends as Formula 1 will give me first-hand experience of that environment and help me grow as part of the Cadillac F1 family.”

Herta joined Cadillac’s nascent F1 project as a test driver in September. Cadillac and the Andretti team Herta raced for in IndyCar are operated by TWG Motorsports.

Cadillac has already confirmed Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas as its two drivers for the 2026 F1 season, but an American racer would have obvious appeal for the General Motors-owned brand.

Herta impressed when he joined IndyCar, winning his third start in the series at the age of 18. He has won nine times since then and finished second in the series last year.

Hitech entered Formula 2 in 2020 and no driver has won the championship with them so far. However they are enjoying their most competitive performance yet this season and currently hold second in the teams’ standings, 12 points behind leaders Invicta.

They are fielding Williams junior Luke Browning and Ferrari’s Dino Beganovic in the series this year. Browning lies third in the drivers’ standings, 27 points behind leader Leonardo Fornaroli, with four races remaining.

IndyCar champion Will Power has taken the seat Herta vacated at Andretti for 2026.
