To support ultra-fast charging, BYD has also developed the FLASH charger, which offers a single-connector output of up to 1,500 kW.

BYD has introduced its second-generation Blade Battery along with a new FLASH charging technology, aimed at tackling two of the biggest challenges in electric mobility—slow charging speeds and poor battery performance in extreme temperatures. The company said the new battery technology enables electric vehicles to charge from 10 per cent to 70 per cent state of charge (SOC) in about five minutes, setting what it described as a new global benchmark for EV charging speed. The battery can reach 97 per cent charge in nine minutes, significantly reducing charging times compared with conventional EV batteries.Even in extreme cold conditions of –30°C, the battery’s charging time from 20 per cent to 97 per cent increases by only three minutes compared with room temperature, addressing a common concern about EV performance in winter.

Speaking about the development, Wang Chuanfu, Chairman and President of BYD said the EV industry must resolve persistent consumer concerns such as slow charging speeds and poor low-temperature charging efficiency.

Higher energy density and longer range

Developed after six years of research and development, the second-generation Blade Battery improves energy density by 5 per cent compared with the first generation, while significantly boosting charging speed. The battery is designed with a “Lithium-Ion High-Speed Channel” and a full-spectrum intelligent thermal management system, aimed at minimising heat generation and improving heat dissipation during fast charging.

When deployed in the Denza Z9GT, the battery enables a driving range of up to 1,036 km, according to the company.

BYD said the battery has passed a series of safety tests exceeding China’s national standards, reinforcing the company’s focus on safety as a key element of new energy vehicle (NEV) development.

FLASH charging infra rollout

To support ultra-fast charging, BYD has also developed the FLASH charger, which offers a single-connector output of up to 1,500 kW.The system is paired with a high-capacity energy storage solution, allowing charging stations to deliver high power output without placing excessive load on local electricity grids.

The company also introduced a redesigned charging interface featuring a T-shaped pulley charger with a “zero-gravity” design, allowing users to manoeuvre the charging connector around the vehicle easily.

BYD plans to build 20,000 FLASH charging stations across China by the end of 2026 and gradually expand the infrastructure globally.

The charging stations will be open to public users, supporting the broader adoption of electric vehicles and faster electrification of transport.

The launch aligns with BYD’s long-term sustainability strategy known as the “Three Green Dreams”, first proposed by Wang Chuanfu in 2006. The vision focuses on integrating solar power, energy storage, and EV charging infrastructure to accelerate the transition to cleaner mobility.
