New Delhi: Fatal accidents and road deaths resulting from the mishaps across key traffic zones have dropped by nearly 15per cent in the first five months of 2025 as compared to last year, Delhi traffic police records have shown.

Till the first half of May, the city has witnessed 88 fewer fatal accidents and 80 fewer deaths connected to these mishaps compared to the same period in 2024.

A month-wise breakdown shows that Jan 2025 saw 114 fatal accidents that caused 120 deaths, down from 122 accidents that killed 124 people in Jan 2024. In Feb this year, 113 accidents were reported that caused 114 deaths, when Feb 2024 had seen 125 accidents and 126 deaths because of them.

In March this year, 136 accidents were reported and 138 people died because of them. This was noticeably lower than the 148 accidents and 151 resultant deaths in the same month last year.

In April, the decline was sharper compared to last year. This April, the city saw 84 accidents and 89 deaths connected to the mishaps. In April 2024, 123 accidents were recorded and 124 deaths happened because of them.

In May this year, Delhi saw 54 fatal accidents that took 56 lives in the first half of May. This was significantly lower than 71 accidents that caused 72 deaths in the same period of May last year.

The overall tally for the first five months stands at 501 fatal accidents and 517 deaths in 2025, compared to 589 accidents and 597 deaths in 2024 — a 14.9per cent drop in fatal accidents and a 13.4per cent reduction in fatalities.

Special CP, traffic, Ajay Chaudhary, said: “This nearly 15per cent reduction in fatal accidents reflects steady progress in making Delhi’s roads safer. It underscores the importance of targeted enforcement in terms of awareness campaigns and other measures, and focused interventions, especially at the identified black spots… We hope for a decrease in the coming months too as the efforts are on.”

While the citywide numbers indicate progress, a detailed analysis of traffic zone-II — which covers the New Delhi, western, and southern ranges — offers deeper insight into the efforts made.

The zone-wise report flagged 43 accident-prone black spots. Black spots are locations where three fatal crashes or ten accidents occurred within a 500-metre radius.

The most accident-prone areas of traffic zone-II are Sarai Kale Khan, Rajokri flyover, near Yashobhoomi Convention Centre in Dwarka, Ashram Chowk, Sec.23, Dwarka and Zakhira flyover, among others.

Additional CP, zone II, Dinesh Kumar Gupta, said: “Road accidents indeed have devastating consequences to loss of life, injury and irreparable harm to individuals, families and communities. Preventing road accidents should be our top priority. Hence, a detailed analysis was needed. Based on the report, to prevent road accidents, many proactive measures are being taken by TIs and supervisory officers of traffic zone-II, which is evident from the drop in the number of accidents.”

The efforts include road safety audits to detect faults in engineering, inadequate signage, and lack of lighting. These are addressed by liaising with concerned civic agencies.

After these efforts, a difference to some extent was observed. In terms of fatal accidents, the New Delhi range saw a difference of 1.4%, while the southern range saw a 12.3per cent drop, and the western range saw a 15.9per cent drop. In terms of fatalities, the New Delhi range saw a 9.4per cent drop, followed by 3per cent in the southern range, and 5per cent in the western range. Overall, there was a 10.5per cent drop in fatal accidents.
