Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday called the automobile industry a “torchbearer” of Make in India and urged it to play a leading role in building a sustainable and self-reliant mobility ecosystem.

The Prime Minister, in a message to the 65th annual convention of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), said the sector has not only boosted mobility and quality of life but also strengthened global confidence in Indian manufacturing.

“Powered by strong policy frameworks and visionary reforms, India is moving rapidly towards building a future-ready transportation ecosystem. This integration of modern technology with world-class infrastructure forms the backbone of India’s ambitious growth story in mobility,” the PM said. Modi highlighted the industry’s growing emphasis on sustainability, including electric vehicles, green technologies and alternative fuels, which he said align with India’s clean mobility goals. Policy think tank NITI Aayog aims to achieve 70 per cent penetration of EVs in all types by 2030. As of March 2025, EV penetration across vehicle categories stood at approximately 7.8 per cent in the country, according to data by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA).

In his message, he also welcomed the increasing role of startups in areas such as energy storage, which are opening up opportunities for design, production and deployment.

“With India advancing toward global leadership in green and smart transportation, opportunities for investment and collaboration are immense,” he said, stressing the importance of government and industry working together to achieve self-reliance across the automobile manufacturing value chain.
